Public education is a cornerstone of HSR's mission and philosophy. It is only when the public is aware of the importance and fragile nature of our shared history that it will be best protected. Thus, HSR has been consistently involved in sharing knowledge of New Mexico's past with school children and adults alike.

Atlatl Demonstration

...scores of southern New Mexico schools have enjoyed a classroom visit from an HSR archaeologist. These visits combine demonstrated activities such as stone tool production or spear throwing with the aid of an atlatl (ät lä tel) or spear thrower with stories of how things used to be in New Mexico. Those stories range from descriptions of the late Pleistocene climate and now extinct animals to stories of the early Spaniards or historic figures such as Oliver Lee or the Apache Chief Victorio.

Our school visitation and support was greatly augmented in 1995 and 1996 when HSR, in a teaming effort with Eastern New Mexico University and Western New Mexico University, was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant through the SIMSE (Systemic Initiative for Math and Science Education) program in New Mexico. The SIMSE program engaged professionals to provide teachers with new concepts of teaching math and science in the classroom. HSR's seminar was entitled Math, Science and Archaeology and incorporated not only all the ways in which archaeology uses math and science but included English and history as well. This program allowed HSR to present five one-week seminars to New Mexico educators representing 30 schools from all areas of the state and resulted in production of a curriculum designed especially for New Mexico teachers that was published by ENMU. The curriculum is available from HSR.    Learn More....
